Average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars registered in Europe decreased by 12% in 2020 and the share of electric cars tripled as new targets started applying

According to provisional monitoring data published by the European Environment Agency, the average CO2 emissions of new cars registered in the EU, Iceland, Norway and the UK in 2020 have decreased strongly compared to 2019, as manufacturers were stepping up their efforts to raise the share of electric vehicles in their fleets. Renewables were the world’s cheapest source of energy in 2020, new report shows

Renewables are now significantly undercutting fossil fuels as the world’s cheapest source of energy, according to a new report. Of the wind, solar and other renewables that came on stream in 2020, nearly two-thirds (62%) were cheaper than the cheapest new fossil fuel, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This is double the equivalent share for 2019. Read more

European aviation sector proposes EU Pact for Sustainable Aviation to realise EU’s 2030 and 2050 decarbonisation ambitions

In its ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package, the European Commission set out proposals aimed at reducing net EU GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030. This represents a major stepping stone to reach the EU’s climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050 and is also aligned with the aviation sector’s own objective of achieving net zero CO2 emissions from all flights within and departing Europe by 2050. "Fit for 55": The EU's plan for a green transition

As part of the European Green Deal, with the European Climate Law, the EU has set itself a binding target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. This requires current greenhouse gas emission levels to drop substantially in the next decades. As an intermediate step towards climate neutrality, the EU has raised its 2030 climate ambition, committing to cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Read more

EU islands and the clean energy transition

From the volcanic Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean to the picturesque Greek islands in the Mediterranean, all the way to the Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea, there are approximately 2,200 inhabited islands in the EU. European islands are greatly diverse in terms of size, population, geography, and territory. 16 million Europeans live on EU islands, which corresponds to around 4% of the EU’s total population. Paris Agreement action could boost energy jobs by 8 million

Researchers have created a model to analyse how efforts to meet Paris Agreement climate targets will affect energy sector jobs, finding that decarbonisation action would increase net jobs by around eight million by 2050, primarily in solar and wind power. Read more
